Carp is one of the most important fish in aquaculture. For future breeding programs, precise phenotyping is required. CT technology has been used to predict body composition in mirror carps. Back fat has proven to be a suitable parameter for predicting the fillet fat content. The volume calculation of back fat provides better results than a two-dimensional thickness measurement of back fat. The fillet yield can be predicted with moderate results by CT-based thickness measurements of the fillet.

In a previous mapping study including body composition and bone mineral traits obtained by DXA scans, QTL for bone mineral traits were rare. This study aimed to clarify if the mapping results were influenced by the analysed body regions. Hence, analyses were repeated using the same material (551 pigs) and methods but two manually defined body regions instead of the initial whole-body setting. Our results show an overall high consistency of mapping results especially for body composition traits.

The present study evaluated bone mineralisation (in terms of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC)) and body composition traits using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry three times during growth in entire boars (EB), immunocastrated boars (IB), and surgically castrated boars (SB). Nine body regions were analysed for bone mineral traits and compared for the sex types. Significant differences were found regarding BMD among EB, IB, and SB and regarding different body regions.

The productive longevity of sows in breeding herd systems has become a key evaluation metric due to its importance with respect to both profitability and animal welfare. In the current economic climate, associated with rising costs of feed, a sow's productive life plays one of the most important roles in determining the profitability of the system. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors that influence sow removal from a herd.

The influence of exterior traits and calving ease on milk yield in Czech Fleckvieh cows was analyzed. The influence of height at the sacrum and body depth on milk yield was demonstrated. The length of the fore and rear udders, the angle of udder attachment, and the depth of the udder all had a significant impact on milk yield. Thus, evaluation of the udder and frame's exterior traits is crucial for milk production. In the case of calving ease, only the influence of muscularity was proven.

Research was carried out on 40 Holstein–Friesian cows. The cows were divided into two equal groups: control (C) and experimental (E). The diet of group E cows was supplemented with mineral and vitamin premixes. Premixes in group E influenced the biochemical parameters of the blood of the cows and improved their health but did not affect the chemical composition of their milk. In group E, the yield of milk, protein and fat was higher, and no cases of lameness or metabolic diseases were recorded.

Ewes' reproductive performance could be predicted using the data available early in their life. Ewe birth rank, dam birth rank, first litter size, and first lambing interval are significantly associated with ewe reproductive performance up to the fourth year of life. Precise prediction of ewe reproductive performance using the early predictors is impossible due to the low R2 predicted. The value of the lower threshold of the 95 % prediction interval might be useful in making selection decisions.

Factors such as genotype, sex, type of birth, maternal age, weaning age and birth weight must be considered in evaluation of pre- and post-weaning growth traits. Myostatin mutation was introduced to native Turkish breed Ramlıç by marker-assisted introgression (MAI). The mutation has a positive effect on ultrasonographic carcass traits in crosses. Lambs with myostatin tended to have deeper longissimus muscle and good carcass characteristics, and they may be recommendable for Turkish farmers.

We studied the impact of the COVID-19 restrictive measures on the extensive farming system of small ruminants. We found that the breeders’ daily work routine was negatively affected in holdings with a high number of sheep. The majority of breeders did not change the movements of the animals in pastures, the amount of the given feedstuffs, the hygienic conditions on the farms, or the employed workers. A decrease in demand for animal products and a decrease in their prices were observed.

After performing in-depth research on miRNA localization, distribution, and function-related metabolism, we found that these exosome-concentrated miRNA target genes were interrelated with development and basic cell functions, such as metabolism and immunity. It is speculated that miRNAs in milk can influence offspring via milk exosomes.

The interaction between genotype and environment changes depending on the interaction of the sub-environments. The environments have a hierarchically structured impact. With regard to the growth of the chicks, nutrition seems to have a higher value than red mite infestation. While a clear interaction between genotypes and poultry red mite infestation was observed in ad libitum feeding, the genotypes reacted similarly to infestation under feed restrictions.

The study aimed to highlight the general trend of indigenous Lao pig utilization and the altered reproductive performance with special reference to location and rearing systems. Indigenous pigs are not only important for household consumption, but they also serve as household savings that the households use anytime, i.e. to support their children's education and traditional activity performance. Proper management is needed to improve reproductive performance of indigenous pigs in Laos.

For local breeds kept in small herds, consideration of classical herd effects implies imprecise genetic evaluations. In consequence, the present study aimed to evaluate different herd clustering strategies, considering social–ecological and herd characteristics. The similarities of herds within created herd clusters and improved reliabilities of estimated breeding values suggest the application of herd clusters in statistical models for genetic evaluations in local breeds.

Selection for increased production in intensive and extensive livestock production systems caused animal health and welfare to deteriorate. This is observed in reduced fertility, lameness and claw health in dairy cattle and pigs, resulting in unnecessary culling. In addition, inbreeding has resulted in a number of genetic defects in cows, sheep and pigs. Accurate recording and an increased awareness of welfare traits are necessary to find sustainable solutions.

The objective was to find whether cow growth, milk performance, and behaviour are affected by rearing conditions until weaning after a milk-fed period of 84 d. Holstein heifers were assigned to one of three treatments: SM, pen with mother to 21st day, then group pen; SN, with own mother, then in pen with nursing cow; H, in hutch from 2nd to 56th day. The SN group tended to have the highest production of milk for 305 d and crossed the maze the fastest.

This research aimed to determine the effects of body weight, the body condition score (BCS), body measurements, birth type, birth weight and sex on the gestational length in sheep. The lowest and highest gestational lengths were found to be 148.90 and 151.41 d respectively. It is thought that the use of the BCS, which is easily applied by the breeder, will have a positive effect on determining the bodily reserves of sheep and the reproductive efficiency as well as on obtaining healthy lambs.

When PF and T were used instead of SO, especially in grower feed, the field performance improved except for mortality. This situation was not seen in slaughter performance except for a few cases. At the end of the study, it was seen that if certain ratios are not exceeded, the use of PF and T instead of SO may be economic alternatives.

Kappa casein (κ-CN) plays an important role in the formation, size and stability of casein micelles. We identified a total of eight single nucleotide polymorphisms in buffalo CSN3. Based on these, seven κ-CN variants and four synonymous variants were inferred and named. The sequences of κ-CN variants were significantly different between buffalo and the Bos genus. This study can help reveal the different physicochemical and processing properties of milk between buffalo and the Bos genus.

The rabbit kit index (KI) combines the kindling rate (KR) and the average litter size (LS) per group of rabbit does per year or per farm and represents the number of total or live-born kits per 100 inseminated does. The KR is the percentage of does kindling from the total number of inseminated does. The KI characterizes the complex fertility situation on a given rabbit farm. The KI can be used to demonstrate and solve problems with artificial insemination and general insemination management.

Short summary
Tail tip inflammation is a well-known animal health and welfare problem in beef cattle, but data on tail tip necrosis in dairy cows are scarce. We examined the tail tips of 641 cows from five different herds to assess whether lesions occur in dairy cows, what type of lesions occur, and how common they are. We found different types of lesions and classified them into seven groups. Tail tip lesions were very common, suggesting that tail lesions in dairy cows require further investigation.
