Phenotypic and genetic trends, genetic parameters, and breeding values of the fattening and slaughter traits of 1162 Hungarian Simmental bulls were evaluated for the progeny test database. Based on our results, it seems that the simultaneous selection, in which, in addition to milk production, meat production is included in the dual-production index at a proportion of one-third, causes neither a substantial improvement nor a deterioration in the meat production of the Hungarian Simmental breed.

Ewes' reproductive performance could be predicted using the data available early in their life. Ewe birth rank, dam birth rank, first litter size, and first lambing interval are significantly associated with ewe reproductive performance up to the fourth year of life. Precise prediction of ewe reproductive performance using the early predictors is impossible due to the low R2 predicted. The value of the lower threshold of the 95 % prediction interval might be useful in making selection decisions.

The team that prepared this article developed and patented electrical teat dipping (ETD) to prevent cow mastitis. ETD was developed by combining teat dipping application and an electrical field stimulation technique on teats. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of ETD on clinical mastitis incidence and bulk tank milk somatic cell counts on dairy farms. Based on our findings, we conclude that the effects of ETD on mastitis rates reduction are very positive.

This study aimed to understand the effects of adding low-dose oxytocin hormone into ram semen on the pregnancy rate and reproductive efficiency of sheep. A total of 53 out of 122 Chios ewes were inseminated with oxytocin hormone content, and successful pregnancy was achieved 90.56 % of them. In examination of the pregnancy rate, one of the indicators of reproductive performance, the difference between the groups is statistically significant (p = 0.046; p ≤ 0.05).

Myostatin mutation was introduced to native Turkish breed Ramlıç by marker-assisted introgression (MAI). The mutation has a positive effect on ultrasonographic carcass traits in crosses. We studied the impact of the COVID-19 restrictive measures on the extensive farming system of small ruminants. We found that the breeders’ daily work routine was negatively affected in holdings with a high number of sheep. The majority of breeders did not change the movements of the animals in pastures, the amount of the given feedstuffs, the hygienic conditions on the farms, or the employed workers. A decrease in demand for animal products and a decrease in their prices were observed.

The objective was to find whether cow growth, milk performance, and behaviour are affected by rearing conditions until weaning after a milk-fed period of 84 d. Holstein heifers were assigned to one of three treatments: SM, pen with mother to 21st day, then group pen; SN, with own mother, then in pen with nursing cow; H, in hutch from 2nd to 56th day. The SN group tended to have the highest production of milk for 305 d and crossed the maze the fastest.

There was a statistically significant increase in inbreeding coefficient between 1997–2021.
