The aim of the research was to compare the thickness and the medullation of white and coloured wool from alpacas of different ages. The colour of the wool did not significantly affect the thickness and degree of medullation of the alpaca wool. Discontinuous medullas are found even in very fine hair. With age, the mean fibre diameter increased; the share of non-medullated fibres in the fleece decreased; and the share of medullated fibres, especially those with an discontinuous medulla, increased.

The composition of muscle fibers is influenced by animal breed or age. In our study we found differences in fiber diameter between sheep breeds. Lambs of a more primitive breed were characterized by smaller diameters of all fiber types. The study has shown that the diameters of muscle fibers in the examined muscles increase with age. It was also stated that the muscle type, animal genotype and body weight at slaughter influence the chosen meat quality attributes.

In this work, alpaca wool thickness and medullation characteristics were analyzed based on the animals' sex and color. The wool of females was thinner and had a lower medullation percentage than for males. The share of non-medullated fibers in the area up to 30 µm was also greater in the wool of females than for males. Light wool was thinner and had a lower degree of medullation than dark wool. The discontinuous and continuous medullated light fibers were thinner than those of dark fibers.

In an experiment the longissimus lumborum and gluteus medius muscles were collected from lambs of two genotypes to analyse physico-chemical traits, fatty acid profile, taurine, carnosine, and L-carnitine. Results showed a greater impact of the lamb’s genotype on physical traits of meat than on its chemical composition and content of bioactive components. Muscle type had an effect on meat colour; collagen content; fatty acid profile; and the amount of taurine, carnosine, and L-carnitine.

The research was carried out on lamb meat to determine the physicochemical characteristics and oxidative stability of lipids. The analysis was performed on fresh and 14 d aged longissimus lumborum and gluteus medius muscles. The meat aging determined all physicochemical features except protein and fat content. The tenderness of meat was better in muscles aged for 14 d. The muscles differed in the degree of lipid peroxidation in both fresh and aged meat.

Wet brewers grain (WBG) is successfully used in animal nutrition, especially in ruminants. The low cost of this fodder also has a positive impact on the economics of production. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of WBG to lamb feed on growth, slaughter value and meat quality. Lambs fed WBG were characterized by higher daily gains and better meat quality. The results indicate that WBG could be used in slaughter lamb production as a source of cheap fodder.

Milk produced by two non-dairy breeds, i. e., Żelaźnieńska and Wrzosówka sheep, maintained under the same nutritional conditions, did not differ in terms of the amount of basic components. Higher amounts of PUFAs n-3, a more favorable ratio of n-6/n-3 and a lower level of cholesterol were observed in milk of the more primitive breed (i.e. Wrzosówka). We suggest that non-dairy breeds can provide high-quality milk that can positively affect the carcass quality of lambs slaughtered at low weight.

Ewes' reproductive performance could be predicted using the data available early in their life. Ewe birth rank, dam birth rank, first litter size, and first lambing interval are significantly associated with ewe reproductive performance up to the fourth year of life. Precise prediction of ewe reproductive performance using the early predictors is impossible due to the low R2 predicted. The value of the lower threshold of the 95 % prediction interval might be useful in making selection decisions.

This study aimed to understand the effects of adding low-dose oxytocin hormone into ram semen on the pregnancy rate and reproductive efficiency of sheep. A total of 53 out of 122 Chios ewes were inseminated with oxytocin hormone content, and successful pregnancy was achieved 90.56 % of them. In examination of the pregnancy rate, one of the indicators of reproductive performance, the difference between the groups is statistically significant (p = 0.046; p ≤ 0.05).

Three-way crossbreeding was performed with Australian White, Dorper, and Charollais as terminal male parents and elite F1 hybrids of Australian × Han, Dorper × Han, and Charollais × Han as female parents. Based on the growth of three-way crossbred and Small-tailed Han lambs as well as the effects of CLPG, the offspring of male Australian White and female Charollais × Han showed apparent heterosis, and the individuals with the T allele had improved body weight and body size.

Factors such as genotype, sex, type of birth, maternal age, weaning age and birth weight must be considered in evaluation of pre- and post-weaning growth traits. Myostatin mutation was introduced to native Turkish breed Ramlıç by marker-assisted introgression (MAI). The mutation has a positive effect on ultrasonographic carcass traits in crosses. Lambs with myostatin tended to have deeper longissimus muscle and good carcass characteristics, and they may be recommendable for Turkish farmers.

We studied the impact of the COVID-19 restrictive measures on the extensive farming system of small ruminants. We found that the breeders’ daily work routine was negatively affected in holdings with a high number of sheep. The majority of breeders did not change the movements of the animals in pastures, the amount of the given feedstuffs, the hygienic conditions on the farms, or the employed workers. A decrease in demand for animal products and a decrease in their prices were observed.

Here we clarify the specific expression and mechanism of the EPH receptor and Ephrin during the development of hair follicles, as well as their upstream and downstream signaling pathways and activation pathways. This study verified the effect of EPHA4 and Ephrin A3 genes on fine-hair follicles through RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry testing. It is of great significance as it could speed up the promotion of breeding sheep for wool.

An analysis of variance was used for comparison. No such comparison had previously been carried out in Slovakia. Meat from lambs assigned to pasture was better.

In sheep production, the body condition scores and parities are important environmental factors affecting lamb yield. Extreme body condition scores (fattening state) lead to negative effects on lamb yield. In the present study, it was revealed that ewes with medium and fat body condition scores (BCS: 2.5–4.0) were profitable. It was shown that the body condition score had minimal effects on the birth weights of lambs, and the incidence of dystocia was increased in thin and very fat ewes.

The aim of this study was to perform a multivariate analysis of lambs' birth weight, survivability traits, growth performance traits, and other defined factors. The study focused on one flock of Suffolk sheep kept under permanent pasture management. Overall 1012 lambs were investigated over 3 years. The results of the study detected lambs' optimal birth weight for this management system. This study also suggested practical implications of important factors when improving flock profitability.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of premating ewe weight and age on ewe reproductive performance and lamb growth and survival in Central Anatolian Merino sheep. Multiple birth rate, birth weight, and growth performance of the lambs increased proportionally with the increase in live weight of the ewes prior to mating. Therefore, it is important to increase the live weight of lambs at puberty and to select ewes that attain a higher premating weight for breeding.
